Welcome into the essentials for the week. It has been a good week-
sweet worship on Sunday, powerful teaching of God's Word, 2 men who
chose to follow Jesus for the first time and many others who decided it
was their turn to dive in and serve. And all of that was just the first
day! I do pray that it has continued to be an amazing week for you as
we have pressed on in the fast, made time and space to seek God in the
prayer room, and use your hands to serve your family, your church, and
the world as a part of God's Kingdom.
Pastor Andrew and I (Pastor Rodney) were able to go away for a couple
of days this week with our wives (and of course the tiniest of our
crews- Judah and Maggie) to a church planter's conference in Nashville
for a couple of days and just hang out with other church planting
pastors. It was a great time to just be away, to pray, and to share
with and hear from other pastors about our hopes, our struggles, and
our one single passion for the Church of Jesus Christ and its ability
to move among our cities and into the nations. So, collectively, we
thank you for letting have a moment away for that purpose. Plus, we got
to hang out for a couple of hours with Ed Stetzer, missiologist to the
stars (as melissa hall has dubbed him- ingenious)- church planter
extraordinaire, prolific author and collector of useful information and
generally incredibly well-read and smart guy. He ussually talks to
crowds of hundreds or thousands, and we had him in the room for a
couple of hours with 20 of us just picking his brain and basking in the
brilliance of the moment. Extremely good times...
As well, a fresh new Calfee appeared on the scene this week. Eric and
Susanna welcomed Benjamin Brooks into the world on Tuesday afternoon.
They made their way home this afternoon, new life in arms, and all are
quite well. There is an email circulating about getting them some food
over the next couple of weeks, so if you want to see the new little
man, this is the perfect way to do so. Cook them up something yummy and
drop by...
Of course, there is much to come for this week...
1. Sunday begins the real deal @ Southtown! (can i get a what?! what?!)
Yes! We should be excited! The start of all that we have been planning
for these past months gets its kick off Sunday. GED class, Job
Placement, and Kids class kicks off this Sunday. Please continue to
pray for God's favor as this is when all of the prep work is really
tested and we find out what changes will be necessary and find out
really how open to change we are! We are expecting great things,
because God has continually led the way, going before us, opening doors
to opportunity, and making a way for what He wants to do. Come on and
join in, help out, get your hands dirty, and serve!
2. Prayer and Fasting Continues...
The official 21 day corporate fast draws to a conclusion this Sunday
(although there are some who will be continuing on toward the 40 day
mark- so be in prayer for them). This week we are still pushing
through, expectantly, continuing the fast. We have been praying in the
prayer room this week. If you have not been, there is still time, so
come on! It is open!
3. Set up and Tear Down...
Alright, folks...we need help. I have been asking for a couple of weeks
for some people to volunteer to help out with the set up process for
Southtown. As of yet, we have gained only one volunteer, Andy
Greenfield, who graciously said he would lead the team (thanks Andy!).
We need help. We need 5 or 6 olks who will commit to doing this
regularly, so that we have people who know what to do each week. If we
can put that type of team together, setup should take only 20-30
minutes. So, we need your help. Please contact me if you can help- do
not wait for someone else to do it. Jump out there and volunteer. Just
reply back to this email and let me know.
As for tear down, everyone will need to jump in and work on it and it
will happen very quickly. We need to leave it in better condition that
we found it, so please, don't run out the door, pitch in and let's make
this as easy on everyone as possible.
4. The Feast
We had planned to have a feast together after worship Sunday morning to
celebrate al that God has been doing during this time of fasting.
However, we have run into a couple of road blocks.
1. This being the first Sunday of classes and such, we really don't know how many people to expect and plan for.
2. I actually have a meeting tomorrow that was requested today by the
leadership @ Southtown. That meeting is @ 10.30 am, and I am not really
sure of its purpose, but to give a bit of definition to our presence in
Southtown- what we can and cannot do, etc...So, be in prayer for that
meeting tomorrow.
These things in mind, we are unable to really put a plan together for
the feast on Sunday. We thought about pushing it off until the next
week, which is the first of Feb, but that is the day of the 1st Sunday
worship gathering, so it would be too much.
Here is what we will do. We are actually going to just hold off until
after everyone who is fasting is finished. There are many who are
pushing through to 40 days, so we will just rearrange and push off the
feast until after that time. So, we will take the next leadership
meeting slot, which is Wednesday, Feb 18 and gather that night to
feast. We will have a better idea of who is getting involved from
Southtown (we will have them filling out contact info as they come in
to classes or worship), we will be better able to prepare, and we will
all be able to join in as all of the fasting will be complete at that
point.
Thank you for your flexibility on this. We are learning to be more
flexible as we try to minister in a new way. Again, thank you for your
understanding and help on that.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
Now, a couple details for those breaking a fast who have not eaten in 21 days or have eaten only specific things in those days:
There is a tendency to complete a fast an then jump back in and have 2
of everything you see that is edible (and maybe a couple things that
are not). That is completely unhealthy for mulitple reasons.
A. Your body has changed to survival mode or at least changed to learn
to nourish itself off of what you have been putting in your body,
which, in most cases, is far more healthy than what you normally put in
your body. You have been cleansing your body of many, many polutants,
poisons, and toxins, and you are pure inside (at least moreso than you
were). Therefore, diving back into the way you used to eat can upset
your system and bad things can happen (from stomach issues-which are
nasty enough- to sugar issues and far worse). Please be mindful of your
body in this time. Do not gorge yourself- you have not been fasting in
order to make room for the world's largest lunch, but to please God. So
think about pleasing God in the way you return to your regular eating
schedule.
B. God has most likely been purifying some other things in you, as
well. I have never come off of a long-term fast when God has not shown
me something about the way I eat, drink, or otherwise care for my body
that needed to change. Let's not ignore those things, either. If God
has been teaching you things about nutrition and health and stewardship
of His temple (your body), and He probably has, celebrate them, because
he has revealed truth to you, and obey His desires for you.
5. First Sunday Worship Throw-Down Gathering Singing Sharing Praying Time Thingy (not the actual name of it, or maybe it will be- we don't know yet)
The first Sunday in Feb, which is the 1st, is just 2 weeks away. That
night we will have the first of our to-be-named worship gathering
events. Honestly, we do not know as of yet what those might become, but
we know that we want to be able to gather as a family and worship,
pray, share in each other's stories, and minister to one another's
needs. That could happen in many different ways, so each one may look
quite unique. This we know- it will be loud, because it should be. It
will be celebratory, because it is about Jesus. It will be powerful,
because we will share our stories (and our testimony is powerful- Rev
12.11). It will be good, because it is always goo to be near God and
to be together. So, make your plans. There will be no house church on
those nights- we will come together, all the house churches, and
worship.
6. Easter
We want to throw a huge Easter party this year- because we should. It
should be the Church's loudest day. It is a day of victory- the day
when the Gospel cry was first heard, and a day it should echo through
our homes and our city streets. So, let's party! We want to do
something way bigger than we actually can and we will need you to do
it. We need a few more of you to help pull this together (we have
already had a few volunteer to get it cruising), and we will need
everyone to pitch in on the day to make it go. We actually want
Southtown to throw a party for Park Place, so we will be bringing on
some of the Southtown folks to help olan and as many as possible to be
there to pull it off. It will be a huge party with huge games, food,
sound, lights, stage, band(s), egg hunts, inflatable things- maybe even
a helicopter- who knows?! So, if you want to help, let me know asap, as
we need to get things rolling quickly. There is less than 3 months
until party day...
alright.
the end.
